Substance of the poem

At a distance within view, the lunar beams function as a spotlight on the Ganges. The dark night sky is up full of millions of stars. Do you hear the far desire of the incoming and the outgoing steamers. They sway like a pendulum on the breast of the Ganges that looks like a stage. Long ago, when civilization commenced, the curtain of the stage -- the world -- was raised. Again, it will fall down some day or the other, when the apocalypse will come in the offing. Then we may be given a chance for the expiation of our sins. This life, this world -- everything -- is nothing but like a play indeed.

Lo! Yon the moon

Is a spotlight

On the Ganges!

The dark canopy

Is hung from above

With millions of diamonds

Encrusted in it.

O! Hear the distant desire

Of the entering and exiting

Steamers, oscillating like

A pendulum, on the stage.

The curtain has been raised

Long, long ago.

Someday the curtain will

Fall down (who knows when)

When we’ll be given

A chance to purge off

Our sins, all our sins.
